Motorized navy drapery panels operated from a wall control

How motorized drapery works

Motorized drapery uses the same fabric panels and hardware you would pick for a manual install. A quiet motor inside the rod or behind the track moves the panels open and closed. Clients like them for the convenience, lower energy bills, better home security, cordless safety in homes with kids and pets, and the ability to reach tall foyers, stairwells, and other hard-to-reach windows. Ashley has an AV and automation background, so the design call and the automation call happen as one conversation, walking through motor type, control system, hardware finish, and fabric for each window.

Choosing the Right Motorized System

Motorized Track Systems

Ceiling or wall mount track with carriers gliding in an internal channel. Best for wide windows, sliding doors, and ripple-fold or pinch-pleat panels, and the cleanest look when you want no visible hardware.

Motorized Curtain Rods

A traditional rod with the motor hidden inside and finials and finish visible. Best for grommet or ring-top panels in traditional and transitional homes where the rod is part of the design.

Layered Systems

A dual-track setup with sheer in front and blackout behind, each on its own motor. The sheer drops at dusk, the blackout at bedtime, and both open on the morning timer, common in primary bedrooms with east-facing glass.

Powering the motor

Hardwired or battery, both work

If your house is already wired for it, hardwiring is the cleanest result. Nothing to charge, nothing to swap out, and the motor disappears into the build. We also do the wiring ourselves when it isn't there yet, which is worth doing during a remodel or new construction while the walls are open.

If you would rather not open a wall, battery motors do the same job for less. You charge or swap the batteries roughly once a year, depending on how many times a day the shade runs and how big it is.

Neither one changes how the shade looks or what you can control it with. It's a cost and access decision, and Ashley walks the house with you to work out which rooms are worth wiring and which are fine on batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom motorized drapery are quoted per project after a free in-home consultation, since the price depends on the fabric or material, the size of your windows, and whether you add motorization. Financing is available through Acorn Finance.

For tall windows, wide window walls, primary bedrooms on a schedule, and any window adjusted more than once a day, yes, and the fabric lasts longer without daily hand-pulling. For small windows touched once a week, manual is usually the better value. Ashley walks through the math room by room at the consultation.

It uses the same fabric panels as a manual install, with a quiet motor inside the rod or behind the track that opens and closes the panels. You control it by remote, app, wall switch, or a scheduled timer.

A motorized rod hides the motor inside a traditional rod, with finials and finish visible, which suits grommet and ring-top panels. A motorized track uses carriers in an internal channel with no visible hardware, which suits wide windows, sliding doors, and pleated panels.

Yes. Motorized drapery integrates with Control4, Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and Lutron, so you control it by voice, app, or schedule alongside your other smart home devices. Ashley programs the integration herself.

In most cases you'll need new motorized hardware, since the motor has to be built into the rod or track. Battery-powered motorized rods and tracks retrofit into existing homes with no new wiring, so it is a straightforward upgrade even in a finished house.
