Standard Shades Are Not Built for Overhead Glass
A wall-mounted shade is engineered for vertical installation. Put one on a skylight and it sags, tracks poorly, and lets heat pour through the gaps. Skylight shades use specialized mounting hardware designed for horizontal or angled overhead glass so the shade sits flush against the frame, operates smoothly, and actually does the job.
South Jordan sits at over 4,400 feet elevation. Summer sun angles are steep and direct. An unshaded skylight in a South Jordan home is a significant source of heat gain from May through September, and a source of heat loss through the glass during Utah winters. A properly installed skylight shade addresses both.
Picking the Right Skylight Shades
Cellular (honeycomb) shades are the most common fabric choice for skylights. Their honeycomb structure traps air in both directions, reducing summer heat gain and slowing winter heat loss through the glass. Light-filtering roller fabrics work well when diffusing light is the primary goal. Blackout fabrics are available for bedroom skylights where morning light is the issue.

Motorized skylight shades run on remote, timer, app, or integrated Control 4 system. Battery-operated motors require no new wiring, which matters in vaulted ceiling installations where running electrical is difficult.

Frame dimensions, slope angle, ceiling height, and surrounding trim all affect what hardware and fabric cut gets ordered. Ashley also has a background in AV and automation. When motorized skylight shades need to integrate into a Control 4 system or coordinate with other motorized treatments in the home, she programs the system herself. That's not a capability most window covering installers bring to the job.
