Choosing The Right Plantation Shutters

Real wood shutters use basswood or hardwood, take stains beautifully, and feel very durable. They are the choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms where the architecture and the finish both matter. Hand-matched to existing wood trim is a common request.

Faux wood and engineered hardwood shutters look nearly identical to real wood from a few feet away, weigh more, cost less, and stand up to humidity in bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms where real wood would warp. The finish is factory-applied and holds its color.

Cafe shutters cover the bottom half of a window only. They give privacy at eye level while letting the top of the window pull in full daylight. Common on kitchen sink windows, French doors, and dining nooks where you want the view of the yard without the view of the neighbors.

Arched tops, angled cuts, sunbursts, ovals, and porthole windows all get custom shutters built to the exact opening. The Daybreak custom homes and the Anthem area new builds in South Jordan often have specialty shapes that big-box shutters cannot fit. Ashley measures each shape herself.

When To Use Plantation Shutters

Plantation shutters are not the answer for every window, but they are the answer for a lot of them. They fit traditional, transitional, craftsman, and modern farmhouse interiors with no extra work. They become part of the room rather than sitting on top of it.

They are less common in strictly modern minimalist interiors, where roller or solar shades read cleaner against flat trim, and in rooms with very large window walls where the panel weight gets impractical. But in a South Jordan primary bedroom with two east-facing windows that need real light control and a finished look? Or a Daybreak craftsman dining room where the original trim deserves a treatment that matches it? Plantation shutters are usually the right call, and that is exactly the conversation you will have at the free in-home consultation.

A Designer, Not a Big-Box Installer

West Shade Co is not a big-box installation service. Ashley Ivie founded the business in 2020 after 20 years of residential interior design, because she kept watching clients get the wrong window coverings (wrong scale, wrong material, wrong function) from companies that were selling product instead of solving design problems.

Every project starts with a free in-home consultation. Ashley drives to your South Jordan home, brings physical wood and color samples, measures every window herself, and walks you through the options in your actual rooms with your actual light. The shutters are then ordered to your exact specifications and installed by our team from start to finish. We carry Alta, Graber, and all major manufacturers, with the Manufacturer's Lifetime Limited Warranty on every product.
